Stupid Mann is a romantic journey of Abhi(Jiwan Luitel) and Asma. Abhi is an emotional guy who was going to America but was struck in Thailand due to betrayal, where he meets Asma who is a beautiful Nepali girl living in Thailand with her father. It was a sad movie and I felt really sad about the movie, not because of the story, but of how the movie is. One more wasted Nepali movie. Stupid Mann is a romantic movie, but I couldn’t feel any romance inside, has lots of action, but not thrilled, and plenty of stuffs were clumsy.

For any movie, it’s really important that the audiences get connected to each character. It’s a really difficult thing to achieve this until everyone performs to their fullest. Niraj Baral has a lot of room to improve. He has good looks and that a plus but that’s not everything. If you cannot act well, it will be difficult to sustain in industry. With the likes of Dayahang, Saugat Malla and Arpan Thapa rising in the Nepali film industry, there has been increased competition in Nepali movie industry. So, it will be a nightmare for even Jiwan Luitel if he does be careful on which movie he plays and how much he makes effort to become a better actor. It’s always risk to play for a new director. It’s not just about competing Nepali movies now but we have lots of high budget foreign movies kicking our ass. You cannot just relax and say “Let’s make a movie”. Once your movie is released, it’s not just your movie. Your movie belongs to audiences as well, as they pay for it. So, you are not just the one who loses.

‘Plot:

Stupid Mann is love story set in the backdrop of the Thailand. It’s an emotional journey of the four main characters where each character has to struggle to find their love. Abhi is among them who works in restaurant at Thailand & dedicated to fulfill his family obligation. Age of 28, Abhi is sincere & sentimental. One day he meets a girl named Asma & falls in love at the first sight. Asma is a medical student, age of 25 living with his father. When Abhi’s feeling for Asma in reach your zenith, he comes to know that Asma is a call girl. Abhi’s dream shatters. In the mean time Asma starts to give attention to him but now Abhi ignores Asma.

I believe everyone make mistakes, whether it’s a professional soccer player or president of USA. But you are more likely to make mistakes when you’re drunk. The movie “Thuli” is also about a mistake. A mistake that a guy(Jivan Luitel) unknowingly makes. He have sex with a girl named Thuli(Garima Pant) when he was drunk. Thuli is a girl of Badi community who vows to help other helpless girls who are force to do sex labor. Before starting anything about the movie, let me tell you something about Badi community that I know.

Believed to have once migrated from Baishali in India, the community used to earn its living entertaining royal families and courtiers by dancing and singing. With the passage of time, their old profession could not survive and some of them opted for sex trade as a last resort to sustain their livelihood. They are ranked at the bottom of Nepal’s caste system, even within the Dalit intra-caste hierarchy, which has given them the infamous label of ‘untouchables of the untouchables’. Badi women in particular are affected by discriminatory practices and social stigma due to their perceived association with prostitution.

The script was quite okay, but it was not a good movie. The first half was very boring, with very little fun, emotions and action was very poor. For a movie to be better, I think dialogues play very important roles, and dialogues we not better. Most of the time, movie was progressing with only one or two words and that was too boring to watch. So, there are lots of things to learn from this movie and hopefully, the director Surya Bohora makes a better movie for us. However, I appreciate the team for their effort to make people aware about the Badi community.

Star Performances

I had very high hopes from Garima Panta but she failed me. She was so good in the movie “Jhola”, and this time she wasn’t looking good as a fighter. May be she needs more training but I would like to blame the script and the director as it’s always up to him on how you present your actors. There was also nothing goods to take from Jivan Luitel. His dialogues were too flat and boring. He has a lot to improve if he wants to compete with the likes of Sagat Malla and Dayahang Rai.
