Director/Written by: Hem Raj BC

Nepali movie: Sambodhan is based on a quest of a police inspector and news reporter to find a serial killer. This Hemraj BC directed film casts Dayahang Rai as a senior inspector, and Namrata Shrestha as a news reporter of Kantipur media. Other cast in lead role includes Binay Bhatta who is also Youth Politician, Prashant Tamrakar and Suleman Shankar who is remembered as Ikku.  Before this, Hemraj BC has provided super-hits like Hostel and Jerryy. There is also a special appearance of Gaurav Pahari and Salon Basnet.

If I say Nepal is a corrupt country, it would not be a surprise to anyone. People talk about corruption and bribery everywhere freely. Corruption is grounded in the roots of our country. We mostly blame government bodies for bribery, but corruption lies in each of us. Corruption has become part of our society and slowly it is killing our country. We break traffic signals and we try to bribe traffic police before he tries to take our license. We even bribe people to make our driving license and also to get our name on a scholarship. From school admission to job employment, corruption is grounded all over the country. These are just a few examples of us being corrupt in the root level. The great king Prithivi Narayan Shah said, “Ghus line ra dine desh ka satru hun” or people involved in giving or taking of bribery is the greatest enemy of our country. But as we see around us today, we see many enemies of our own country within us. The movie Sambodhan is related to corruption and corrupt people. As this is a suspense movie, I wouldn’t like to disclose story events here.

The Hostel was not a bad movie, Jerryy was even better and this time Hemraj BC has exceeded my expectations. The script is excellent and story-telling is even better. The director used both humour and thrills very carefully and the story seems to be a good balance. Most of the songs seem to be fitting for the film’s situations and helped in moving the story forward. Background score was good and the cinematography was perfect. Editing was perfect except on a few occasions. When Inspector Ramji was called by his senior (DIG) for the first time, the mouth movements and voice were not synced properly. Beside this, everything looked in order. Dialogues over the movie were brilliant. Dayahang Rai is back with his another sensational performance. He made just for his character as a strict police inspector and even excelled on few occasions. His performance made other look amateurs. Even the great Namrataa Shrestha looked to have lost grip in front of Dayahang. He is a rare talent and I salute him for his energetic performance once again.

There are very few things to criticize in this movie. One that I felt awkward is, to catch one old fellow, why would you need more than 10 police force with pistols. Secondly, I was a bit surprised to see how easily second suspect escapes from jail.

Plot:
Sambodhan is a movie about a serial killer. The movie starts as a person is murdered on the road. Ramji Gole (Dayahang Rai) is a senior police inspector and his assistant is Inspector Prabhat. Paru (Namrata Shrestha) on the other hand is the news reporter of Kantipur media. Every month, a person is killed in a similar manner, with lots of coins around his body. Sambodhan is the quest of Inspector Ramji Gole and his assistant to find this serial killer and know about him.

Watch or Not?
This is an exceptional movie with a very strong storytelling. This is a must watch movie for all movie lovers.

‘Soul Sister’ Movie Review /soul-sister-movie-review/ /soul-sister-movie-review/#comments Thu, 15 Jan 2015 16:41:06 +0000 /?p=636

Cast: Namrata Shrestha, Rajesh Hamal, Deepak Sharma, Shakuntala Baidhya, Raveena Deshraj Shrestha
Director: Prashant Rasaily

Nepali movie: Soul Sister is about Maya and her recurring nightmares. Maya is a lonely girl. She is confused, helpless and living between illusion and reality. Directed by Prashant Rasaily, Soul Sister features Namrataa Shrestha in the lead role as Maya and this picture was produced by Namrataa herself. Movie also has a special appearance of superstar Rajesh Hamal.

“A nightmare is an unpleasant dream that can cause a strong emotional response from the mind, typically fear or horror but also despair, anxiety and great sadness.” – wikipedia.org

Experts describe nightmare are vividly realistic, disturbing dreams that rattle you awake from a deep sleep. They often set your heart pounding from fear. We often have nightmares which wake us up with our heart pounding, and sometimes even with a scream. Such isolated nightmares are considered normal. But when your dreams result in extreme terror, anxiety and recur often, they might cause distress or problems with daytime functioning. ‘Soul Sister’ has a similar case of Maya who is disturbed by recurring nightmares of visiting a strange and haunted place every day.

They say people have a tendency to love anything that’s fresh and so do I. That’s why I always have good words for new things and I can smell new in Soul Sister. Maybe not in the world, but looking at the history of Nepali movies, Soul Sister has definitely tried a new thing. I liked the attempt of using narration for storytelling, but there were times when movie just had nothing to say. There were times when movie was not going forward and making it look flat. The story revolves around same place for most part of the movie which was making it boring. I’m afraid there was less thrills and minimum horror. Few important things that were made confusing are what I didn’t like. Maya explained that her twin sister died when she was born. But I’m not sure how Maya witness grownup twin sister in her dream. Also, why would Wastav kill a helpless and lonely girl who never bothered him? This is still mystery to me. I like the concept though and the finishing of the movie was ideal.

A good music remains close to a heart. As for this movie, background music played a vital role in making the thrills lively and was very much helping the rhythm of movie. Cinematography was exceptional and star cast performance was creditable.

Plot:
Maya (Namrataa Shrestha) is a lonely girl who is confused, helpless and living between illusion and reality. As she travels to her father’s house, she meets Wastav who helps to drop her to her place. Wastav is a married man and his wife is pregnant. After they meet second time in a library, they start seeing each other more often. Maya has a problem of recurring nightmares. Every day she has a dream of visiting a mysterious and horrifying place. In her mysterious dream, someone is calling her name and she seems to be following her. Watch it to know if she will make it to the other side.

Watch or Not?
‘Soul Sister’ is a new concept. So, I would definitely recommend anyone to watch this movie.

Megha – Movie Review /megha-nepali-movie-review/ Fri, 14 Feb 2014 11:22:51 +0000 /?p=51

Released On: 14 Feb 2014
Directed By: Samjhana Upreti Rauniyar
Starring: Namrata Shrestha, Raymond Das Shrestha, Siddhartha Koirala, Bhintuna Joshi

MEGHA is film about relationship of a professional architect from upper middle class girl caught between two men, her husband and boyfriend. The film illustrates the emotional journey of a young professional married woman Megha (Namrata Shrestha) who is married to Ishan (Raymon Das Shrestha) and falls in love with Gaurab (Siddhartha Koirala).

Samjhana Rauniyar’s Megha released on Valentine’s Day was expected to spread love and I expected something good from this movie. But sadly, there is nothing good to say about this movie and I had worst two and half hour. The script was not so good, dialogues were poor, and the movie was a disaster. The songs in the movies were not so convincing and not in proper time. Director should have focused on more rehearsal and should have worked more scripts and story to make audiences happy. Namrata Shrestha was the only performing actor and all other couldn’t express well and were lacking passion, never looked natural.

The movie started with a song, and a romance between newly married husband and wife. Suddenly they start having regular fights on their personal life style and their life starts separating. Then Megha meets Gaurab, who was the son of Megha’s Big Boss. Megha then starts having affairs with Gaurav as her relation with husband was going on tension. As the Megha’s relation with Gaurav grows, her husband, Ishan apologizes and starts behaving well. This takes makes more tensed as she couldnot choose between her husband and her love. So, leaves both.
